Gisborne Airport in New Zealand is often listed as one of the world’s most unusual and potentially nerve-wracking airports due to a rare and striking feature: a fully operational railway line that crosses directly over its main runway. That means that planes have to plan their takeoffs and landings around the train schedule. It sounds scary, but the system is tightly managed, and safety protocols ensure that only one mode of transport uses the crossing at any given time.
It’s also noteworthy that the airport is small, with a single terminal and four tarmac gates. It handles over 60 domestic flights daily, and the railway only operates about 15 times a year. Still, it’s the only place where your flight might be delayed because the train’s running late.
