Tourist Spot Installs Toilet Timers

A popular tourist destination in Datong, China has installed timers above each toilet stall to manage the increasing number of visitors. These timers display either “empty” when unoccupied or the duration the stall has been locked. While staff at The Yungang Buddhist Grottoes claim the timers ensure visitor safety during emergencies and are not intended to control bathroom time, the setup has drawn questions on Chinese social media.

A video of the toilet timers at this UNESCO World Heritage site has gone viral, with many finding the monitoring of how long on the loo embarrassing. With a record 3-million visitors to the 252 caves and 51-thousand statues last year, the grottoes continue attracting more and more guests, prompting management to think outside the box to accommodate everybody.
