A harrowing near-death experience went down in Washington state recently when a 19-year-old hiker plummeted 400 feet down a canyon after climbing onto an illegal trail along a washed-out riverbed. Incredibly, the teenager escaped with just minor injuries thanks to a daring rescue operation.
Meanwhile, others who’ve fallen from the same High Steel Bridge haven’t been so lucky as the local fire chief estimates a 20-to-1 ratio of recoveries. Despite the “Warning” sign, the allure of the 695-foot bridge spanning the Skokomish River draws thrill-seekers who “come up here to just be stupid,” straining emergency resources, according to the chief.
