Scientists Say Eating A Hot Dog May Shorten Your Life By Over 30 Minutes

Scientists warn that eating ultra-processed foods, like hot dogs, could significantly shorten your life expectancy. A study by the University of Michigan found that consuming just one hot dog could cut an average of 36 minutes off your life, while cured meats could reduce it by 24 minutes. “The urgency of dietary changes to improve human health… is clear,” said Dr. Olivier Jolliet, the study’s lead researcher, who suggests small substitutions can have a major impact without drastic diet changes.

The study also highlighted that while ultra-processed foods are harmful, healthier options can add time to your life. For example, eating certain fish could add up to 28 minutes, and fresh fruits, vegetables, and even peanut butter and jelly sandwiches contribute positively to life expectancy. With 75-percent of food in the U.S. classified as ultra-processed, experts emphasize the need for dietary awareness, as these foods are linked to more than 30 health conditions, including cancer and early death.
