Russian Police Officers Who Turn Down Bribes Are Given The Amount Offered As A Reward

Can you bribe someone to stop taking bribes? One region in Russia is trying to find out. In the Rostov region, police officers who turn down bribes now get rewarded with the same amount they were offered. The policy also lets them open criminal cases against the bribers.

In the first half of 2025, officers intercepted 260 bribery attempts and more than 25 cases were started recently. Alexander Rechitsky, the regional police chief, said this shows the system’s “strong anti-corruption stance,” but some worry it might encourage bribery attempts just to get the payout.
