Lost Luggage Ends Up In Alabama Store, Millions Of Bags Annually

The Unclaimed Baggage store in Scottsboro, Alabama, has become a unique destination, selling items from luggage lost that was never reunited with its owners. Airlines typically try to match suitcases with passengers for three to four months before selling them to the store, where items are sorted, cleaned, and put up for sale at discounted prices. “It’s like Christmas every day – we never know what we’ll find,” said store owner Bryan Owens, whose family has operated the business since 1970.

With a vast inventory ranging from clothing and electronics to rare treasures like a Rolex watch and a suit of armor, the store attracts over a million visitors annually. Shoppers enjoy hunting for bargains and imagining the stories behind the items, such as a wedding dress that may have missed its special day. “Through loss, there’s a chance for hope and redemption,” said store spokesperson Sonni Hood, emphasizing how the store gives forgotten belongings a second life.
