Can you smell what the priest is cookin’? St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Shipley, England, has introduced “Wrestling Church,” an event that combines professional wrestling with Christian messages. The initiative is led by 37-year-old Gareth Thompson, who credits both pro wrestling and his faith with transforming his life. Thompson believes that the dramatic narratives of wrestling, often depicting the struggle between good and evil, align seamlessly with biblical stories such as David and Goliath.
During these events, the church’s traditional setting, complete with stained-glass windows, becomes the backdrop for wrestling. The Rev. Natasha Thomas, the priest in charge at St. Peter’s, acknowledges that while this approach is unconventional, it has successfully drawn a diverse audience that includes families and wrestling enthusiasts. Rev. Thomas says the events are giving the congregation a new sense of community within the church.
