Jeepers creepers, that frog picked its mouth for its peepers? A high school student in Ontario, Canada, stumbled upon a toad in her backyard that had its eyes inside its mouth. At first she thought the toad might have swallowed another frog, but when she looked at it more closely she realized the eyes were part of the toad itself. She named it “Gollum” and contacted the local newspaper, which sent photographer Scott Gardner to document the unusual amphibian.
He went on to call the 1992 picture “the most iconic image of my career,” and for good reason. The weirdest part of the story isn’t the picture, it’s the fact that this toad isn’t alone in having to open its mouth to look around. It’s uncommon, but it’s been seen in other amphibians as well.
