They Sharpened A Giant Pencil In Minneapolis On Saturday

In Minneapolis, the Lowry Hill East neighborhood has a fun tradition where people gather every year to sharpen a huge No. 2 pencil. This giant pencil, over 12 feet long, sits in a community garden and was first made in 2002 by wood sculptor Curtis Ingvoldstad out of a tree damaged in a storm in the yard of John and Amy Higgins.

The day of sharpening included two Swiss alphorn players providing entertainment, and a handout of purple pencils to commemorate Prince on what would have been his 67th birthday. Some people dress as pencils or erasers, and yes…they use a giant pencil sharpener.
