We all know that Netflix has been working up ways to combat password sharing, but executing a feasible plan has proven difficult. The strategy seems simple enough: slap users with shared passwords with an additional fee (around $2.99 for each additional person). That new policy has been in the testing phase in places like Peru, and has resulted in “mostly negative” reviews, cancelled subscriptions, and continued password sharing “without repercussions from the company.” Different versions of the policy are also being tested in Costa Rica and Chile. After losing around 200K subscribers in the first quarter of 2022, Netflix decided going after password sharers was the best way for them to keep the cash rolling in, but U.S. customers have yet to be affected.
