The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office is testing an autonomous police vehicle called the Police Unmanned Ground Vehicle Patrol Partner, or PUG, that can drive itself and report crimes using cameras powered by artificial intelligence. The self-driving squad car is part of a year-long trial with the Policing Lab, a nonprofit founded by a former Los Angeles police officer. The vehicle isn’t just for show, as it’s equipped to do the job of a law enforcement officer by itself.
The vehicle can launch flying drones with thermal cameras and stays connected to police databases, license plate readers, and public safety software. Each additional vehicle would cost between $150,000 and $200,000, though the first one was donated. Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said the car will help police connect with the community in new ways. During the trial, the PUG will stick to set patrol routes, won’t go on highways, and will have a police officer sitting in the front seat at all times.
