A young black bear with a fondness for backyards was tranquilized and moved for the second time after roaming into Herndon, Virginia. Nicknamed “Elden” for a previous visit to nearby Elden Street, the bear was first captured on Memorial Day in Langley Park, Maryland, tagged with a collar, and set free in western Maryland. He soon trekked south, climbing trees and drawing spectators in Herndon on June 9th.
Wildlife teams, firefighters, and police used a catch tarp to lower the sedated bear safely before transporting him to a remote spot in Virginia. The Herndon Town Council marked the rescue by declaring June 9th “Elden the Bear Day.” Officials hope the restless juvenile will now settle away from neighborhoods and remind residents to secure trash and bird feeders to avoid future surprise visits.
