A Startup Is Pitching Cloned Human Bodies To Transfer Your Brain Into

A billionaire-backed stealth startup called R3 Bio has been quietly pitching investors on what may be one of the most controversial ideas in modern science: growing brainless cloned human bodies that aging or ill people could one day have their brain transplanted into. The concept came to light through an investigation by MIT Technology Review, which found that R3 founder John Schloendorn had been giving private seminars about the idea and seeking funding for it for years.

The company publicly denied any intent to create brainless human clones, but a co-founder acknowledged the team reserves the right to discuss the idea in hypothetical terms. Scientists who spoke to the publication expressed deep skepticism, citing a long list of biological, legal, and ethical barriers. Among them: cloning human bodies from adult cells remains far beyond current science, and artificial wombs needed to grow such a body do not yet exist.
