AI is now able to get…pregnant? A Chinese pop group’s announcement that one of its singers was pregnant left plenty of people scratching their heads, because Mity and the rest of BABYQUEEN are characters created with artificial intelligence. A message posted in Mity’s name said she was temporarily leaving the group to rest and prepare for a baby.
The group’s creators later said they were students and fans of K-pop who had become overwhelmed by the work of managing the characters, and chose the pregnancy story as a way to pause Mity’s appearances. Some people joked about the announcement, while others said it treated real women’s experiences as entertainment. The creators said they had earned no money from the project and had faced online harassment. They also suggested Mity might return as an actress or a creator of content about mothers and babies.
