Florida Polytechnic University police have shown off a tiny electric flying vehicle with room for just one officer. Called Astro, it has police markings and a small emergency light on top. The $150-thousand machine comes from Swedish company Jetson and can take off and land straight up and down. It reaches nearly 65 miles per hour, but its maximum flight time is only about 20 minutes.
The university demonstrated it for reporters, though it still needs Federal Aviation Administration approval. Police Chief Aaron Murray says the department wants to learn how this type of aircraft could improve public safety, but its short flight time and single seat have raised questions online about its usefulness, especially since campus police already have several camera-equipped drones available for searches and other work.
