Lawyer Fined $10k For Filing Court Brief With Made-Up Citations Created By AI

An Oregon attorney has been ordered to pay $10,000 after a court found his legal brief was full of made-up information generated by an artificial intelligence tool. A state appellate court issued the ruling on March 18th against Salem-based lawyer Bill Ghiorso, finding that his brief contained 15 citations and nine quotes that were entirely fabricated. Ghiorso said he had been dealing with serious health problems at the time the brief was filed and had delegated research to his staff without personally checking the work.

The court ordered him to file a corrected brief and pay the fine within 21 days. It is not the first time an Oregon attorney has been penalized for this type of error; in December, another attorney in the state was fined $2,000 for citing made-up cases and using a fabricated quote after relying on AI, a growing problem in courts across the country.
