Child Renames WiFi Hotspot To “Terrorist” During Flight, Fighter Jets Scramble

As far as reasons to scramble the military, this one’s…interesting. Israeli fighter jets scrambled to intercept a Wizz Air flight from London Luton to Tel Aviv on Feb. 8th after a passenger reported a “threatening message” onboard. The plane, an Airbus A321 carrying around 220 passengers, was ordered into a holding pattern over the Mediterranean Sea while jets escorted it. After landing at Ben Gurion Airport, security teams with bomb-sniffing dogs screened every passenger and searched all luggage.

It turned out a child had changed a parent’s phone Wi-Fi hotspot name to the word “terrorist” in Arabic, and a fellow passenger spotted it and alerted the crew. Authorities confirmed no actual threat was found. Similar Wi-Fi name pranks have triggered security alerts on other flights in recent months.
