Sometimes, a monkey just needs a good popsicle. Animals at Rio de Janeiro’s BioParque zoo got a special treat this week to help them beat the heat; zookeepers handed out popsicles and frozen snacks as Brazil faced extreme summer temperatures. Monkeys received watermelon popsicles, while jaguars got frozen ground chicken treats floating in their water tanks. Some animals even got mixtures with frozen blood.
A zoo biologist said the frozen food helps keep the animals cool and hydrated. Temperatures in Rio climbed above 104 degrees Fahrenheit over the weekend, leading the city to issue a heat warning. It wasn’t unusual for the treat cart to go around to the enclosures; zoo officials said these frozen treats are a normal part of animal care during hot weather.
