Scottish Museum Removes Mummies Because They Didn’t Give Their Consent

A Scottish museum has removed ancient Egyptian remains from display because there’s no record that the people agreed to have their bodies shown. Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum placed a mummified man’s head in storage and has also removed a priest’s remains, a mummified hand and a foot. Museum officials say the move shows respect for the dead and follows changing views about displaying human remains.

Their proposed policy calls for clear consent from the person or, in some cases, their descendants. The decision drew criticism from Conservative politician Murdo Fraser, who said museums should help people learn about ancient cultures instead of hiding history. Glasgow Life, which runs the museum, said current museum guidance calls for protecting the dignity of human remains. Further removals are planned at Kelvingrove and another Glasgow museum.
