Scientists Discover Creature With 24 Eyes That Can See 360-Degrees

Science has found something new to star in your next nightmare. Scientists at Hong Kong Baptist University found a new type of box jellyfish in ponds near Hong Kong’s Mai Po Nature Reserve. The jellyfish, named Tripedalia maipoensis, is tiny, only about 1.5 centimeters long. But it has something pretty amazing: 24 eyes.

The eyes are split into four groups of six; two of those eyes in each group can form images, while the other four just tell light from dark. This setup gives the jellyfish 360-degree vision, meaning it can see in every direction at once. The team first found them in 2020 and has spotted them every year since. Scientists think the jellyfish probably live in nearby waters too, not just the reserve.
