Russia Has “Spy Pigeons” With Brain Implants

The “Birds Aren’t Real” theory is evolving. A Russian company called Neiry has started testing pigeons with brain implants that let them be controlled like drones. The company puts tiny wires in the birds’ brains and gives them small backpacks with solar panels, cameras, GPS, and control systems. Operators can upload flight paths to the pigeons and send signals to their brains that make them turn left or right.

The company says no training is needed and claims the surgery doesn’t hurt the birds’ chances of survival. They tested the pigeons in Moscow and say the birds can fly up to 310 miles a day. The company plans to use bigger birds like ravens and seagulls for different jobs and wants to sell the technology for watching buildings and helping with rescue missions.
