It never fails; when there’s a crisis, there’s someone ready to make a buck from it. A Japanese company is selling bear attack shelters as the country faces a record number of bear incidents. The shelter, called the Kumacon or “bear container,” is a redesigned shipping container strong enough to withstand bear attacks for up to three days. Japan has seen an unprecedented surge in bear encounters this year, with the situation so serious that mail delivery could be disrupted, and the military has been called in to help.
The Kumacon was developed by the company Jacaon working with Tokyo University of Science. The container can handle the bite force of a brown bear, and can also withstand over 192 tons of force from a charging bear. The shelter comes equipped with everything needed for a three-day bear siege, though critics question how practical it would be since people would need to be near the shelter when they were attacked.
