Urine-Based Astronaut Food To Be Tested On Space Station

The first question is…who thinks up this stuff? Astronauts on long space missions might soon be eating a protein powder made from their own pee. The European Space Agency has launched a program called HOBI-WAN (the actual name of the program) to test a product called Solein, which will be tested on the International Space Station. The powder is made using just microbes, air, and electricity. It uses urea, a substance found in urine, as a nitrogen source for making protein.

A Finnish company called Solar Foods developed the powder, which can be added to foods like pasta or bread. The challenge is making it work in space, where there’s no gravity to help mix the ingredients like on Earth. Astronauts will test it in future missions to see if it can really be produced in space, which could help feed people on long trips to Mars.
