Scientists at King’s College London have created a new kind of toothpaste using keratin, the same protein found in hair, skin, and wool, that can actually help repair tooth enamel rather than just protect it. When applied to teeth, keratin catches minerals from saliva and forms a crystal-like layer that mimics real enamel. Over time, this acts like a scaffold that attracts more minerals to rebuild the protective surface.
Tests showed it could stop decay and seal sensitive spots on teeth. Unlike traditional dental treatments, this method uses a natural, biodegradable material and could mark a big step forward in eco-friendly oral care. Researchers expect a keratin-based toothpaste or gel to be available to the public within two to three years.
