Got some spare change and a really big pool? A Chinese court is attempting to auction off approximately 100 tons of live Siamese crocodiles, previously owned by the bankrupt Guangdong Hongyi Crocodile Industry Company, founded by Mo Junrong, known as the “Crocodile God.” The Shenzhen Nanshan People’s Court has set the starting bid at about $550,000 for a lot that’s estimated to include between 200 to 500 reptiles. This marks the third attempt to sell the crocodiles, following unsuccessful auctions in January and February, even after reducing the starting price.
In China, crocodiles are highly valued and used in over 100 products, including cosmetics and wine. The auction stipulates that the buyer must handle all transportation and logistics, as the court will not provide delivery services. Potential buyers are required to possess a legal license for breeding aquatic wildlife and have appropriate facilities to house the crocodiles. There are no registrations to bid recorded for the current auction round.
