YouTuber Makes World’s First Retractable Lightsaber That Cuts Through Steel

Russian YouTuber Alex Burkan says he’s a lifelong Star Wars fan, and now he’s been recognized by Guinness World Records as the creator of the world’s first retractable lightsaber, and it’s no toy. The lightsaber makes a 3.28-foot plasma blade that reportedly reaches 5,072 degrees Fahrenheit and can cut through steel.

Burkan told Guinness that it’s taken him years of work to build the lightsaber, and he plans to improve the design, saying it’s a first prototype with “lots of limitations,” like the fact that it only works for 30 seconds at full power. He also says the lightsaber “just blows up in your hand because of hydrogen flashback,” a bug he might want to work on.
