A 17-year-old goldfish named Merlin recently underwent a groundbreaking surgery to remove a tumor, saving his life and allowing him to eat and swim normally again. Veterinarian Emer O’Reilly, who performed the surgery at MyVet in Dublin, explained that Merlin’s owners were initially concerned he might need to be put down due to his inability to eat. “We mentioned the option of trying to remove the growth, which we suspected was a tumor,” said O’Reilly, adding that the surgery involved a delicate process of using anesthetized water to keep Merlin sedated.
The surgery, the first of its kind at the clinic, involved carefully scraping away the tumor while veterinary nurse Sarah White monitored Merlin’s anesthesia. Though some of the tumor remains, O’Reilly noted, “His owners are delighted Merlin didn’t have to be put to sleep and is now able to eat normally again.” Merlin’s family, including granddaughter Siobhan Lynch, is thrilled with his recovery, saying, “We are all so thankful for their help and care. Merlin is much happier now that he can see properly again.”
