Underwater Hockey Tournament In Hong Kong Advertised As “Physical Hell”

An underwater hockey tournament billed as “physical hell” drew players from across Asia to Hong Kong over the weekend. Wearing masks and fins, competitors held their breath while using short sticks to move a weighted puck along the pool floor. Each team has six players and no goalkeeper, with referees watching for fouls. Games last 30 minutes, split into two halves with a three-minute break.

Players say the rush of chasing a goal can make them forget how badly they need air, while the shared challenge builds strong friendships. The sport began in England in 1954 as a way to keep divers fit during winter, and many competitors are now aiming for the world championship in France next year. Organizers hope better underwater cameras will help more people watch and follow the game.
