Toronto Neighborhood Holding World Cup-Themed Scavenger Hunt For Beavers

A neighborhood in Toronto’s Old Town has come up with what may be the World Cup’s most Canadian attraction: 51 hand-painted resin beaver sculptures, nearly four feet tall, scattered across a six-block scavenger hunt designed to get visitors exploring the area. Forty-nine of the beavers represent competing nations, including two for Canada, while the remaining two represent FIFA and all nations combined. Each was painted by a different local artist in the style of their assigned country.

The area is located about two and a half miles from BMO Field, where Canada opens its home group-stage matches on June 12th against a UEFA playoff qualifier. City officials expect 300,000 visitors to descend on Toronto during the three-week tournament. The organizer behind the hunt, who goes by Posner, said the beaver was chosen as the theme because it’s Canada’s national animal, they’re cute, and they’re small enough to work as an outdoor installation. The scavenger hunt winner gets a prize.
