There’s An “Exploding Tree” Warning Out For The Upper Midwest

It’s not news for people in the upper Midwest, but the rest of the country is amazed at the “exploding trees” alert for some areas due to the winter storm sweeping the country. Social media meteorologist Max Velocity said the Midwest and Northern Plains face an exploding tree risk today and tomorrow as temperatures drop 20 degrees below zero.

The phenomenon happens when water inside tree sap freezes, expands, and cracks the bark, creating a loud noise some compare to a gunshot. Heavy branches can also fall, damaging structures and power lines. Some Midwest residents said they’ve experienced it firsthand, and one person wrote that their maple tree was destroyed during a previous cold snap.
