Gray hair injections that claim to reverse hair color back to its original shade have gone viral on Chinese social media, sparking debate about their effectiveness. The controversial treatment gained attention after Chinese actress Guo Tong posted videos on Douyin about starting the injections in June. The treatment involves weekly injections of adenosylcobalamin, a form of vitamin B12, for three to six months. Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners believe vitamin B12 can stimulate melanin production to restore hair color.
However, dermatologists warn that the treatment’s effectiveness hasn’t been scientifically proven, and potential side effects are unknown. One medical expert explained that while vitamin B12 might help people who are deficient in it, “if you are not deficient, it is almost useless” for treating gray hair. Despite the lack of scientific evidence, interest in these injections is rising in China after Guo Tong’s social media posts went viral.
