A 19-year-old Chinese university student named Xiao Dong became temporarily paralyzed after spending too much time with his head bent forward looking at his phone and working at a summer job. The student from Quanzhou spent hours each day looking down at his device playing games and browsing social media, then got a summer job washing dishes where he kept his head bent forward for long periods. At first, Xiao started feeling numbness in his neck, arms, and legs.
But on July 30th, he woke up with no feeling in his legs and couldn’t move at all. Doctors found a large blood clot in his spine that was pressing on his spinal cord and causing paralysis from the chest down. The constant head bowing had ruptured a blood vessel in his spinal area, creating a dangerous blood clot. Luckily, doctors performed emergency surgery to remove the clot and prevent permanent damage.
