Welcome to the ultimate inconvenience store…A shop in Antarctica provides things like clothing, candy, souvenirs, and post cards if you’re lucky enough to catch them when they’re open. “Polemart,” as it’s known, caters to the 39 employees living at Antarctica’s Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station.
Even though the hours aren’t exactly opportune, the upside of the southernmost store on the planet is that everything is sold at or below cost since “It’s not really there to make a profit. It’s there for fun,” according to one of the station’s inhabitants. Does Polemart sell booze? “Yes,” says station medic Josiah Horneman, “but rationed, so it keeps things to a reasonable level.”
