A soccer match in Istanbul made international headlines after a team captain paused the game to perform CPR on a seagull that had been knocked out of the sky by a goalkeeper’s kick. The incident happened in the 22nd minute of the Istanbul First Amateur League play-off final between Mevlanakapi Guzelhisar and Istanbul Yurdum Spor, played in the Zeytinburnu district. Goalkeeper Muhammet Uyanik cleared the ball from his penalty area, not realizing it had struck a seagull flying overhead until a white object fell to the ground.
Team captain Gani Catan ran over and, finding the bird unresponsive, began performing chest compressions for roughly two minutes, with no formal first-aid training to guide him. Gradually the bird’s legs and eyes began to show movement, and after water was given, it was carried to the sidelines and handed to medical staff. The seagull was later found to have wing damage and could not fly but was reported to be walking and receiving treatment.
