The Scottish Animal Welfare Commission may have almost started a war of sorts. The commission handed in a report to the Scottish government recommending that the country should ban cats in some areas because they have a “significant impact on wildlife populations.” While the commission was concerned about endangered birds and wildlife being killed by the felines, they wound up getting a different predator group ready to fight…cat owners.
The government put out a statement saying they would “fully consider the recommendations,” and then later yesterday a spokesperson said, “Banning cats is not a recommendation of the report and we will, under no circumstances, be banning cats.” The group NatureScot knows better than to get in the middle of this fight; they issued a statement saying “Any decisions on the report’s recommendations are a matter for Scottish ministers.”
