Scientists Use AI To Create New Virus

Pretty sure we’ve seen this movie already. Scientists have used artificial intelligence to design viruses from scratch for the first time, marking a big step toward AI-generated life. Researchers at Stanford University and the Arc Institute used AI to write complete viral genomes, then built the viruses in a lab. Out of 302 designs, 16 worked and were able to infect and kill strains of E. coli bacteria. The viruses are bacteriophages, which only attack bacteria and not humans.

Scientists say these AI-designed phages could one day help fight antibiotic-resistant infections. However, the breakthrough also raises concerns. A separate study showed that AI tools can redesign known toxins to slip past safety checks used to prevent bioweapon development. Experts say strong safety measures and evolving regulations will be needed as the technology advances. One researcher said the next step is AI-generated life.
