Scientists Are Studying “Grumpy Old Man” Syndrome, Which Is A Thing

It turns out there’s an actual medical name for being a grumpy old man. Irritable Male Syndrome (IMS) is a lesser-known condition affecting men that mirrors some aspects of PMS in women, involving hormonal fluctuations that cause mood and behavioral changes. The condition is primarily linked to dropping testosterone levels associated with aging and stress.

There’s also a male version of menopause called “andropause,” but IMS is different. The symptoms? Irritability, low motivation, depression, difficulty concentrating, low energy, and increased body fat. Most men start noticing symptoms between the ages of 40 and 60, with doctors recommending any guy who has some of the symptoms should visit a doctor and have their testosterone levels checked.
