Pokémon champion Donghun Youm is asking fellow players to wash up before tournaments after saying one competitor’s body odor made him throw up. Youm, who won the 2023 Milwaukee Regional Championships, described the incident at the Baltimore Regionals in a September 27th social media post. He said the smell came from a nearby player and was so strong that he had to step away. His friends also struggled to focus on their matches, and the group reported the problem to a judge.
Youm did not name the player, and it is unclear whether organizers took action. Other competitors responded with similar stories about bad smells at gaming events, and some players now want rules allowing judges to hand out match losses for serious hygiene problems in crowded tournament halls.
