It sounds like a plotline from “Airplane,” but it really happened. On a recent Alaska Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Cancun, a passenger’s decision to vape in the lavatory prompted a strong response from the pilot. The pilot addressed the cabin after detecting smoke, sternly reminding passengers that smoking, vaping, and chewing tobacco are prohibited on board, labeling the act a federal offense and threatening to turn the plane around.
The passenger reportedly vaped to cope with stress. Vaping onboard is considered a civil violation, not necessarily a criminal offense, though it can incur FAA penalties. Passengers discussed the situation online, noting that such actions require formal reports from flight attendants and can lead to airline bans.
