People Are Now Making Digital AI Versions Of Ex-Partners

A new trend is emerging in China, where people are using an open-source AI tool called ex.skill to create digital simulations of their former romantic partners. The module lets users upload chat logs, photos, and social media posts to build an AI that can mimic a specific person’s speech patterns, tone, and even their shared memories with the user. The creators describe it as a tool for “personal reflection and emotional healing” and explicitly warn against using it for harassment or stalking.

Not everyone’s on board; the trend has sparked debate around emotional dependency and privacy, since the data of the person being recreated is fed into a neural network without their knowledge or consent. Some users say the tool helped them find closure by finally saying things they couldn’t in person. Others found that interacting with their digital ex helped them realize their former partner “was not all that.”
