If everything else going on in the world wasn’t enough, now we have to worry about our bottles blinding us. Thermos has recalled more than 8 million insulated containers after a design flaw caused at least three people to suffer permanent vision loss. The problem involves certain models in the Stainless King Food Jar and Sportsman Beverage Bottle lines, which lack a pressure release valve. When perishable food or drinks are stored for an extended period, pressure builds up inside and can cause the stopper to violently eject when the lid is opened.
Of 27 consumer complaints reporting laceration injuries from ejecting caps, three involved permanent vision loss. The affected products were sold between March 2008 and July 2024 at Target, Walmart, Amazon, and Thermos.com. Thermos is currently processing refunds and replacements for U.S. customers.
