Newest Japanese Trend: Meditating In Coffins

In Japan, a growing number of people are spending time meditating inside coffins as a way to reflect on life and death. The trend, known as “coffin-lying,” started at a funeral home in Chiba Prefecture and has since spread to a Tokyo spa called Meiso Kukan Kanoke-in, which offers 30-minute sessions in colorfully decorated caskets for about $13. Customers can choose between an open or closed lid, and sessions include optional music or video projections on the ceiling.

Advocates of the practice say sitting with the idea of death can ease anxiety, reduce the fear of dying, and give people a stronger desire to live. The trend has taken on added meaning in Japan, where youth suicide rates have hit their highest levels in over four decades. Those with depression or claustrophobia are obviously advised to skip the experience.
