Mystery Doorbell Prankster At German Apartment Complex Was A Slug

Residents of an apartment building in Schwabach, Bavaria, Germany called police after their doorbells were repeatedly ringing late at night, suspecting teenage pranksters were behind what Germans call “klingelstreich” (similar to ding-dong-ditch). The mysterious ringing continued even after two police officers arrived, and strangely, the building’s motion detector hadn’t been activated despite the constant noise. After closer inspection of the metal bell plate, police discovered the real culprit: a slug that had been sliding up and down the doorbell panel, triggering the sensors with its movement.

One resident told German tabloid Bild that the constant ringing after midnight had made everyone in the building “really uneasy” because no one could be seen at the door, which prompted them to call police. Officers could even see the slime trail the slug had made as it crawled over the sensors. In a lighthearted statement, police said the slug had been “brought down to size, taught about its territory boundaries, and placed on a nearby stretch of grass.” This isn’t the first time a slug has caused such confusion…a similar incident occurred in Essex, England in 2021 when a woman’s doorbell was triggered by a slug.
