A man who recently purchased a house in southern Italy says he got more than he bargained for. Posting on Reddit, he says he found the entrance to a series of tunnels in the property’s barn. Posting pictures of his find, he says the tunnels appear to be a mixture of newer construction and areas that are carved by hand, and no one seems to know why they exist.
He says the tunnels are cold, humid, and filled with bats. Because of the humidity, the new homeowner doesn’t think the tunnels can be used for food or wine storage. With the house in southern Italy, suggestions from the internet include food storage, a fallout shelter, or “Probably mafia (not joking).”
