McDonald’s Is Testing Humanoid Robots In China

McDonald’s is testing humanoid robots at one of its restaurants in Shanghai, and videos of the machines in action have already gone as viral as you would expect. The robots, made by Chinese firm Keenon Robotics, are dressed in the chain’s signature red-and-yellow uniforms and can be seen greeting customers, answering questions, delivering food to tables, and collecting used trays; the pilot is taking place at a single location and is not an official company-wide rollout.

McDonald’s has not commented publicly on the test. Analysts say the move reflects a broader tension in China’s labor market, where some industries struggle to find workers while millions of young people still can’t find jobs. For now, the machines handle basic front-of-house tasks, while humans continue to do the specialized work.
