Reflective of an episode of the sci-fi show “Black Mirror,” an AI-powered candidate named VIC, developed by a guy named Victor Miller, is running for mayor of Cheyenne, Wyoming. The abnormal candidacy is igniting debate about the feasibility of bots holding public office. “It listens to its constituents,” Miller explained, promising to provide VIC with all necessary data, adding, “I’m just a conduit.”
Miller says that VIC, who reportedly has an IQ of 155, can analyze government documents more efficiently than human officials, with the goal of eliminating corruption. “I’m dissatisfied with how public servants treat the public,” Miller said in an interview. Meanwhile, county officials are examining whether VIC can legally be on the ballot, as Wyoming law mandates that candidates must be registered voters.
