Man Suffers Stomach Tears After Eating Expandable Foam

A 45-year-old man in South Korea was rushed to emergency surgery after consuming a plant pot’s worth of expandable foam. The inedible product ended up molding to the shape of his stomach and piercing through the sensitive lining, causing severe pain that required surgery to prevent a fatal gastric perforation and resulting infection.

Doctors at Kyungpook National University detailed the injury recently, saying it led to the organ tearing and leaking its contents. Fortunately, the patient suffered no long-term effects after a two-week hospital stay. Though no one knows for sure why he ate the foam, experts suggest it could be linked to a disorder called pica, which causes people to crave non-food items.
