Man Suffers Burns To Stomach And Esophagus After Sipping Sparkling Water

A cool, refreshing beverage is sometimes none of those things. Pablo González, a 42-year-old businessman from Spain, ended up in the hospital after taking a sip of sparkling water at a restaurant. He was at a tapas place in Salvaterra de Miño with friends and ordered a bottle of a well-known brand of sparkling water with ice and lemon. The bottle seemed sealed, but right after his first sip, he felt a burning pain in his mouth and jumped up.

The liquid in his glass looked yellowish. An ambulance rushed him to Povisa Hospital in Vigo, where doctors found his esophagus and stomach were badly burned, appearing black. For nearly two weeks, he couldn’t eat or drink anything. Doctors aren’t sure if he’ll fully recover or what caused the burns, and they’re still investigating the strange incident.
