Some people report a sudden wave of sadness, worry or dread when their nipples are touched, even by clothing. Often called “sad nipple syndrome,” the reaction is not an official medical diagnosis, and there are no formal studies explaining it. People describe feelings ranging from guilt and loneliness to a sense that something terrible is about to happen. These feelings usually fade within a few minutes.
The reaction can affect anyone, though it appears more common among women. Some experts think hormones may play a role, but the cause remains unknown. They compare it with D-MER, a reaction during breastfeeding that can bring brief feelings of shame or sadness when milk starts flowing. The two may feel similar, but researchers still need to study what causes the response outside breastfeeding.
