The closer you get to Monday’s solar eclipse line of totality, the more stores you’ll see selling glasses that supposedly will protect your eyes as you look skyward. While you’re looking at the sun is no time to find out that you purchased poorly. Solar filtering glasses need to be able to block “between one-in-100K to one-in-2,000,000 parts visible light, and…sadly…there are plenty of fakes out there that can end up hurting you.
- Be sure that you’re buying your eye protection from a reputable outlet
- Check the lenses for defects such as holes, scratches, and slits
- Make it a point to look for “ISO 12312-2 standard” which should appear directly on the product
- Put them on while you’re indoors…you should nothing except bright lights, which will appear “faint”
- Only if you’re confident thus far, put them on outside and look at the sun for no longer than one second. The “filtered view should show you a perfect circle resembling the moon in shape and size”
- If you have any doubts, scrap them and go buy protective eyewear you have more trust in
